I was born in Mississippi in 1975 and never left for long. I studied architecture at Mississippi State, graduated in 1999, and have practiced in Jackson ever since. Architecture is still the day job — coordinating complicated ideas across projects of every size, working them out on paper, then watching them become buildings where people live, work and thrive. Painting is where I take the same instincts somewhere looser.
What I keep circling back to is pattern. We understand almost everything through it. Letters fall into patterns that make words, words into sentences, sentences into meaning. The same thing happens through our eyes: color against color, line against line, the give-and-take of solid and empty space. Our minds read those arrangements and pull an idea out of them. Language, music, and visual art all run on the same machinery — simplified placeholders we keep building and rebuilding until they add up to something we recognize. That process is most of how we’ve defined the world around us.
So my work tends to start small. A few direct marks, a baseline, nothing fussy. Then I let the piece tell me whether to push it further or pull it back, going on the feeling of the thing. The pattern work informs itself; more often than not it decides where it wants to end up before I do. The making is what I’m really after — building something that didn’t exist an hour ago interests me far more than any finished result.
That’s also why I’ll paint on almost anything: stretched canvas, pressed MDF board, a sheet of recycled cardboard when it suits the idea. The surface serves the work. What you end up with is observed phenomena and relationships boiled down to layered, simplified strokes, with enough left open that your own imagination finishes the piece.
