About the artist

I’m a painter and a practicing architect based in Jackson, Mississippi. As an architect, I coordinate complex ideas into buildings people actually inhabit; painting is where I take the same instincts somewhere looser. What I keep circling back to is pattern — the way color against color, line against line, and the give-and-take of solid and empty space let our minds pull an idea out of an arrangement, the same way letters add up to words and words to meaning.

My work starts small: a few direct marks, nothing fussy, then I let the piece tell me where it wants to go. Where architecture answers to budgets, codes, and clients, paint answers to nothing but the feeling of the piece — and that freedom is the whole point. What you end up with is observed relationships boiled down to layered, simplified strokes, with enough left open that your own imagination finishes the piece.
